This year, we are planning to provide Summer Meals in a grab-n-go style from late June to early August.
For information about locations and meals, contact Becci Read-Ryan at bread-ryan@sharevancouver.org or 360-553-8064 OR text FOOD/COMIDA to 877-877. Locations and times will be available on this page in English, Spanish, Russian and Chukese.
Volunteers are needed to prepare and package meals; drop-off/pick-up meals in coolers to meal sites; staff sites to distribute meals. Updates regarding the operation of Share’s Summer Meals program will be provided here. Interested volunteers can also contact Molly Evjen at mevjen@sharevancouver.org or 360-952-8228.
During the school year, many children receive free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch at school. But what happens when school lets out for the summer? Hunger can be a severe roadblock for the learning process and childhood development.
Our program strives to provide fresh, healthy meals that include fruits and vegetables so that the children in our community do not face hunger during the summer months. In 2019, we served 18,066 free meals at 19 meals sites. All of the locations are open sites and all children ages 18 and under are welcome to come and enjoy a free meal even if they are not enrolled in the program.
Throughout June and August, families can call the Family Food Hotline 1-888-4-FOOD-WA to receive up-to-date information about locations for free lunches for kids across the state.
Lunch sites are located at schools or facilities with a greater than 50% rate of free and reduced-price lunch enrollment. This program is part of the Simplified Summer Feeding Program and is funded by the USDA.
To support our Summer Meals Program, contact Becci Read-Ryan, Hunger Response Assistant Director, at (360) 553-8064 or bread-ryan@sharevancouver.org.
‘How to’: Summer Meals Videos for Volunteers
At Share’s Summer Meals program, the kitchen is a very busy place during meal prep and delivery time as volunteers prepare 500-1,200 meals to go out on any given day. These videos can help prepare you for your volunteer shift as we walk you through our kitchen tour, packing coolers and drop off empty coolers.
